How it works
Each round cuts the field in half: losers are eliminated and winners advance; the final decides the champion. The count below is for single deciding matches, not multi-game series.

Each round cuts the field in half: losers are eliminated and winners advance; the final decides the champion. The count below is for single deciding matches, not multi-game series.
A good fit when you need a clear winner quickly and early elimination is acceptable. Less suitable when every team needs several guaranteed matches.
Single elimination without a third-place match: 8 teams need 3 rounds and exactly 7 matches (8 − 1), because each match eliminates one team.
With 8 teams there are 4 first-round matches, then semifinals and a final: 7 matches over 3 rounds. The winner of each match advances.
With 7 teams, the bracket is sized up to the next power of two. In this example 1 teams receive a bye and enter without an opening match; there are still only 6 actual matches.
Unlike double elimination, one loss ends a team's run. Unlike a league, the winner is decided by the bracket rather than a table built from many head-to-head matches.

A knockout tournament with 8 teams has exactly 7 matches across 3 rounds – every match eliminates one team until the winner is decided. There is no third-place match in knockout mode; places 3 and 4 go to the semifinal losers.
At 15 minutes per match a knockout with 8 teams takes around 1 h on 2 pitches and about 45 min on 4 pitches – pure playing time. Add extra time for breaks as well as setup and teardown.
More pitches mean more parallel matches and a shorter tournament. The first round has 4 matches – that is the maximum number of pitches you can use in parallel in that round. The table above shows how long the tournament takes with 2, 3 or 4 pitches.
No. In knockout mode, teams are drawn at random. Until the first match is completed, you can choose teams that should preferably receive a bye.
If the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 6, 12 or 20 teams), Turniermeister automatically assigns byes in the first round. The affected teams advance one round without playing.
Yes, with a paid plan: every tournament then gets a public page with bracket and live results, shareable via link or QR code. In demo mode the tournament stays private.
Enter the 8 teams and Turniermeister generates the complete knockout fixture automatically: all 3 rounds with 7 matches, randomly drawn pairings and a shareable bracket with live results. No spreadsheet or manual fixture list needed.
