Is this format right for your tournament?

How it works

By default, each team plays every other team once. You can instead limit the league to a chosen number of rounds. Set the number of knockout places separately; the standings supply the highest-ranked teams. First place faces the lowest qualifier, second place the next-lowest, and so on.

When it fits — and when it does not

A good fit when one shared league table should lead into a knockout round that decides the title. Less suitable for a direct knockout with no preliminary phase or a championship with several separate group tables.

Match count and assumptions

Example assumption: eight teams play a complete single round robin in seven rounds with four league matches each; this example explicitly selects four knockout places and 3-1-0 points. 8 × 7 / 2 = 28 league matches. The four qualifiers play two semi-finals and one final, or 4 − 1 = 3 single knockout matches. That makes 31 matches overall; limiting league rounds changes only the preliminary match count.

Worked example

Fictional results: teams are ordered by strength as Adler, Bären, Füchse, Wölfe, Otter, Kraniche, Luchse and Eulen; each team beats every team below it 1–0. With the selected three points per win, the table is Adler (7 wins/21 points), Bären (6/18), Füchse (5/15), Wölfe (4/12), Otter (3/9), Kraniche (2/6), Luchse (1/3) and Eulen (0/0). The four explicitly selected knockout places go to Adler, Bären, Füchse and Wölfe. The seeded semi-finals pair first vs fourth and second vs third; adding the final makes 3 knockout matches and 31 matches overall. This example has no third-place match.

Odd fields and byes

With an odd number of teams, one team has a bye each matchday in a complete league. The total remains n × (n − 1) / 2 league matches. The number of knockout qualifiers is chosen separately.

How it differs from similar formats

An open knockout starts directly with its bracket. Playoff adds one shared league table first. A championship instead starts with several separate groups and their own tables.

Playoff format questions

How does a playoff tournament work?

A league preliminary phase is followed by a knockout final. The league is complete by default; you can limit its round count and set the number of knockout entrants separately.

How many matches are in the eight-team example?

In the complete single round robin, each of eight teams plays every other team once: 8 × 7 / 2 = 28 league matches. The four explicitly selected knockout places add two semi-finals and a final: 3 knockout matches, 31 matches overall.

How do teams qualify for the final stage?

Once the league phase is complete, the number of highest-ranked teams selected in the knockout settings advance. This example selects four; their order comes from the shared standings and its scoring rules.

How are the semi-finals seeded?

Qualifiers are paired by table position: first place against the lowest qualifier, second place against the next-lowest. With four teams, that is first vs fourth and second vs third.

Are the knockout rounds best-of series?

No. Each playoff pairing is one match; a four-team bracket has two semi-finals and one final. Best of N is a separate mode for series made up of multiple matches.

Is playoff the same as a championship?

No. Playoff uses one shared league table. A championship starts with several separate groups, each with its own table.

Can I plan a playoff before registering?
