Teams first play a single round robin inside their groups. Depending on the team count, 1, 2, 4 or 8 teams from each group advance to one knockout bracket, where semifinals and a final decide the title.
A good fit for medium and large fields when everyone should get several preliminary matches before a clear final stage. Less suitable when time is very limited or every team must play the same number of matches through to the end.
For equal-sized groups: group matches plus knockout = 2 × 4 × (4 − 1) / 2 + (4 − 1) = 12 + 3 = 15 matches. This assumes a single round per group and the app's default qualification.
With 8 teams, there are 2 groups of 4. Each group has 6 matches, 12 total; the top two from each group make four qualifiers, who play two semifinals and a final: 15 matches overall.
The listed team counts divide evenly into groups. Other totals can create groups of different sizes, so count each group's pairings separately. A group with an odd number of teams has one bye per matchday.
Unlike playoff, this format starts with separate group tables rather than one league table. Unlike a league, it ends in a knockout round where one loss eliminates a team.
