The problem: many teams, limited time — round robin no longer works

With more than 12 teams, a full round robin becomes impractical. The Swiss system solves this.

Round robin with many teams needs too many rounds

With 20 teams in a full round robin there are 190 matches — not feasible in a single tournament day.

Knockout eliminates teams after one match

For tournaments where all participants should play multiple matches, knockout is too harsh — one bad day and you are out.

Manual performance-based pairings are extremely time-consuming

Assigning appropriate opponents by current standings after each round manually takes time and creates errors.

Swiss system automatically calculated — fair pairings every round

Automatic pairing by current standings

After each round, teams with similar point totals are paired — Turniermeister handles the calculation.

Number of rounds freely configurable

You decide how many rounds are played. Swiss system needs significantly fewer rounds than a full round robin.

No team is eliminated

Every team plays every round — regardless of whether they won or lost.

Clear final standings by points

After the last round there is an unambiguous ranking by points, goal difference and head-to-head.

When does the Swiss system make sense?

  • Many teams (10–32+) but limited time for a full round robin
  • Chess tournaments, darts competitions and similar individual sports
  • Foosball and table tennis events with many participants
  • Situations where no team should be eliminated early

What the Swiss system concretely delivers

  • Every team plays the same number of matches
  • Pairings become fairer with each round
  • Far fewer rounds than a full round robin
  • Clear final standings without an extended playing schedule

Frequently asked questions about the Swiss system

How many rounds do I need in the Swiss system?

A rule of thumb: log₂(number of teams) + 1 rounds. For 16 teams around 5 rounds, for 32 teams around 6. Much fewer than a full round robin.

Can a team face the same opponent twice?

The Swiss system avoids repeat matchups as much as possible. With few rounds and many teams it can occasionally happen — Turniermeister will flag this.

Does the Swiss system work for team sports?

Yes. Although it originated in chess, it works for any sport with clear point rules. Especially popular for foosball, darts and table tennis tournaments.

How are tiebreakers handled?

First head-to-head result, then goal difference, then Buchholz score (strength of opponents faced). Rules can be adjusted per sport.
