In a Best of N series, two opponents play a series – whoever wins the majority of games first wins the series. Key: N is the maximum number of games per series (Best of 3 = max 3 games, 2 wins needed). The series ends immediately when a player reaches the required majority (early termination). Best of N is a duel valuation; the overarching tournament mode here is a simple KO.

N & Wins Clearly Separated

Best of N specifies the maximum games per series. For odd N, (N+1)/2 wins are needed (e.g. Best of 3 → 2 wins, Best of 5 → 3 wins). The series ends as soon as the majority is reached – no fixed match durations.

Fair Decisions Through Series

A single bad game doesn't decide everything. Over multiple games, the better player prevails. Sport-specific sets (tennis), legs (darts) or maps (esports) are not equated – Turniermeister evaluates series generically.

Automatic Evaluation & Early Termination

Turniermeister automatically detects when a series is decided (e.g. 2:0 in Best of 3) and advances directly to the next pairing. No manual recalculation needed.

How it works

Best of N is a duel valuation: two players play a series until one reaches the majority. The overarching tournament mode is a KO bracket. In Best of 3 the series ends at 2:0 or 2:1; in Best of 5 at 3:0, 3:1 or 3:2. The number N (max games per series) is chosen independently of the participant count.

When it fits — and when it does not

Fits when a single game has too much variance and you want fair duels over multiple games. Ideal for table tennis, darts, esports. Less suitable for team sports with fixed sets (volleyball) or when only a quick KO result is wanted.

Match count and assumptions

With 4 teams in KO with Best of 3: 3 series (2 semifinals, 1 final). Each series: 2 to 3 individual games. Total: 6 to 9 games. Min/max instead of fixed duration. With 2 fields approx. 5–6 slots of ~20 min (playing time, no breaks).

Worked example

Concrete example: 4 teams (A, B, C, D) in KO with Best of 3. Semifinal 1: A vs. B → 2:0 after 2 games (early end). Semifinal 2: C vs. D → 2:1 after 3 games. Final: A vs. C → 2:1 after 3 games. Total 8 individual games. The bracket shows the series progression per pairing.

Odd fields and byes

With an odd number of participants (e.g. 5 teams) there are byes in the first round. The bye winner waits for their opponent – the series only starts once both opponents are determined.

How it differs from similar formats

Distinction: KO tournament = single games per pairing. Best of N = series per pairing. Double-KO = two brackets (winner/loser). Team Competition = team vs team with multiple singles per round. For darts see Create Darts Tournament, for table tennis see Create Table Tennis Tournament.

FAQ: Best of N

What does Best of N mean?

Best of N means two players play a series of up to N games. Whoever wins the majority first (e.g. 2 out of 3) wins the series. The series ends immediately when the required wins are reached – not all N games are necessarily played.

Which Best of variants exist and how many wins are needed?

The most common are Best of 3 (2 wins needed), Best of 5 (3 wins needed) and Best of 7 (4 wins needed). Generally: for odd N, (N+1)/2 wins are needed. The series ends as soon as a player reaches that number.

Which sports is Best of N suitable for?

Best of N is ideal for table tennis, darts, badminton, esports and many other sports with short individual games. Important: Turniermeister evaluates generic series (game 1, game 2, …) – sport-specific sets, legs or maps are not automatically mapped.

Does Turniermeister automatically detect when a series is decided?

Yes! Once a player has reached the required majority (e.g. 2:0 in Best of 3), the series is automatically ended and the next opponent in the bracket is assigned. No further games of that series are shown.

How many games does a Best-of-N tournament with 4 teams have?

With 4 teams there are 3 series over 2 rounds. A series ends as soon as a team has won 2 games. That is at least 6 games (every series decided by the shortest winning run) and at most 9 games (every series played to its full length). If the number of teams is not a power of two, some teams get a bye in the first round.

How many games does a Best of 3 series have?

A Best of 3 series lasts between 2 and 3 games: whoever wins 2 games first takes the series. Across all 3 matchups that adds up to 6 to 9 games in the whole tournament.
