At least two runs make sense. With more runs, the average becomes even more meaningful.

Ideal for formats where consistency across several attempts should be rewarded, such as technical or youth competitions.
How long does an average-based time trial with 0 participants take?
It depends on the number of parallel lanes. With 0 participants and 3 runs each, the pure running time is around 0 min on 2 lanes and about 0 min on 4 lanes – each excluding start breaks.
How are ties resolved?
If two participants share the same average, the better single time decides.
