In a multilevel knockout, no team is eliminated after its first loss. Winners stay in the main bracket, losers move into placement matches. By default, only the two best places of each group are decided. With the option "Play full consolation rounds" enabled, every team plays four matches at 16 teams until every place is fixed. Fictional example: Team A wins all four matches and finishes first. Team B loses its first match and finishes ninth after three won placement matches.

Losers Keep Playing

A team that loses in the main bracket moves into a placement match for the next places. With the consolation option, it keeps playing until its place is fixed.

Ideal for Large Fields

For tournaments from 16 to 128 teams where teams should keep playing several matches after their first loss, not only the winners.

Automatic Placement Matches

Turniermeister creates the main bracket and placement matches automatically. The number of placements can be adjusted in the settings as long as no placement match has been played.

FAQ: Multilevel Knockout Tournament

What is a multilevel knockout tournament?

A multilevel knockout is a knockout tournament in which no team is eliminated after its first loss. Winners stay in the main bracket, losers keep playing placement matches for the next places. With the option "Play full consolation rounds" enabled, every place is decided at the end.

How many teams suit a multilevel knockout?

Turniermeister offers multilevel knockouts for 16, 32, 64 and 128 teams. The number of matches and the duration grow with the number of teams.

How are the placement matches built?

The losers of each knockout round form their own placement group, for example the third-place match, places 5–8 and places 9–16. By default, only the two best places of each group are decided. The option "Play full consolation rounds" plays every group down to the last place. The number of placements can be adjusted in the settings as long as no placement match has been played.

Can I create a multilevel knockout tournament online?

Yes. You can preview it without an account; saving requires registration. Public sharing and helper invitations are available on a paid plan.

How long does a multilevel knockout with 16 teams take?

With 16 teams there are 32 matches in 4 waves (8 matches each). Pure playing time is at least 4 h with 2 courts and at least 2 h with 4 courts. Basis: 15 minutes per match, without breaks, changeovers or the award ceremony. The calculation assumes the option “Play full consolation rounds” is enabled.

What is the difference between a multilevel and a normal knockout?

In a normal knockout, half of the teams are eliminated after each round. In a multilevel knockout, losers stay in the tournament and play for the next places. With the consolation option enabled, every team plays 4 matches with 16 teams and receives an exact final placement.
