Is this format right for your tournament?

How it works

The event has a limited number of rounds. After the opening round, teams with similar records are paired; a loss does not eliminate anyone.

When it fits — and when it does not

A good fit for many participants and limited time when everyone should remain in the event and get several rounds. Less suitable when every pair must meet or the event needs a sole winner without relying on tiebreak rules.

Match count and assumptions

The calculation uses 4 = ceil(log₂(8)) + 1 rounds (at most participants minus one) and 4 matches per round: 4 × 4 = 16 matches. This matches the app's default; the number of preliminary rounds can be set freely. A unique winner is not guaranteed.

Worked example

Example (fictional; draw and results are invented): 8 participants (A–H), 3 chosen preliminary rounds, 12 matches. Round 1 is drawn: A–B 2:1, C–D 1:0, E–F 3:0, G–H 3:1. Round 2 comes from the standings: E–G 2:1, A–C 1:0, B–D 3:0, H–F 3:1. Round 3 follows the new standings: E–A 3:1, B–G 4:0, H–C 2:0, D–F 1:0. Standings with 3 points per win and no draws: 1. E 9 points; 2. B 6 points, goal difference +6; 3. H 6 points, +2; 4. A 6 points, 0; 5. C 3 points, −2; 6. G 3 points, −3 with 4 goals; 7. D 3 points, −3 with 1 goal; 8. F 0 points. That is 36 points for 12 wins. The order points, goal difference, goals is always active in the app.

Odd fields and byes

With 9 participants, one person has no opponent in each round. The app gives a bye to each person only once where possible; it counts neither goals nor a played match. Whether the bye earns win points is set by “Bye counts as a win” in the preliminary-round settings. The planning calculation gives 5 rounds of 4 matches, 20 in total.

How it differs from similar formats

Unlike a league, Swiss does not pair everyone with everyone; unlike knockout, nobody is immediately eliminated. It limits the rounds and uses earlier results to shape later pairings. A round is a stage of the tournament, not a single time slot: the matches of one round can be spread across several courts and time slots.

FAQ: Swiss system with 8 players

How many rounds does a Swiss system with 8 players have?

A Swiss system with 8 players typically has 4 rounds. Each round has 4 matches.

How do pairings work?

After each round, players with similar scores are paired. This pairs opponents with a similar record so far, without elimination. It does not guarantee equal playing strength.

Which sports suit the Swiss system?

The Swiss system is especially popular in chess, darts and other individual sports, but works for team sports too.

Can I share results live?

Yes! With a paid plan, every tournament gets a public page with pairings, rankings and live results – shareable via link or QR code. On the demo plan, a tournament stays private.

How are ties broken in the Swiss system?

If players finish level on points, their order depends on the tiebreak rules for the tournament. Buchholz is a common option, but Turniermeister does not promise to calculate it automatically.

How long does a Swiss system with 8 players take?

At 15 minutes per game, a Swiss system with 8 players takes about 2 h on 2 fields and roughly 1 h on 4 fields – pure playing time across all 4 rounds. Since nobody is eliminated, the playing time per round stays constant. Plan extra time for breaks as well as setup and teardown.
