A playoff is the knockout final round of a season: the 32 best teams from a league or group stage meet head-to-head until a winner emerges. Unlike an open knockout, a playoff starts from a seeding based on the regular-season standings – the table leader faces the lowest seed, so the strong teams only clash late and the final brings the two best together. With 32 teams that means 5 rounds and 31 matches in total. Every match is a decider, optionally played as two legs or a best-of series.
A playoff with 32 teams is played out in a 32-team bracket. Each round halves the field until the final decides the winner – the table shows how many teams play in each round and how many matches that produces.
