What is an average-based time trial with 8 participants?

In this time trial, 8 participants complete several runs – 3 runs are recommended, but the count is configurable. The ranking averages valid times; DNF, DSQ and runs without a time are ignored. A fair comparison requires everyone to have the same number of valid runs, so set equal attempt rules and verify each participant's valid-run count before publishing the ranking.

Calculation for 8 participants

With 8 participants and 3 runs each, there are 24 runs in total (8 × 3).

Time Trial - Average with 8 participants: how scoring works

Average scoring uses the mean of valid times; DNF, DSQ and missing times are ignored. 3 runs are recommended for this example, but the count is configurable.

AspectRule
Runs per participantSeveral runs (3 recommended, configurable)
What countsSum of valid times divided by the number of valid runs; DNF/DSQ/no time are ignored
Ranking orderAscending by average time – the lowest mean leads
TiebreakerEqual averages share a place; the next place follows competition ranking (for example, 1, 1, 3)
OutliersDNF, DSQ and missing times are excluded; one valid time is enough

How long does an average-based time trial with 8 participants take?

How long the time trial with 8 participants takes depends on the number of parallel lanes and the run duration. Because the average needs several runs, the pure running time adds up across all rounds – plan extra time for start intervals, timing and breaks.

What is an average-based time trial with 8 participants good for?

Average scoring can smooth out individual outliers, but it is fairly comparable only when everyone has the same number of valid runs. DNF, DSQ and missing times are ignored, so unequal valid-run counts can distort the means. Set equal attempt rules and verify valid-run counts before publishing the ranking.

FAQ: Time Trial - Average

What is Time Trial - Average?

Each participant completes multiple runs. The ranking uses the average of valid times; DNF, DSQ and missing times are ignored.

Why use average scoring?

It smooths out individual outliers, but averages are fairly comparable only when everyone has the same number of valid runs.

How many runs do I need?

The run count is configurable. One valid time is enough; DNF, DSQ and missing times do not count for their run. Means are not fairly comparable when participants have different valid-run counts. Set equal attempt rules and check each valid-run count before starting.

Which events is this suitable for?

Ideal for formats where consistency across several attempts should be rewarded, such as technical or youth competitions.

How long does an average-based time trial with 8 participants take?

It depends on the number of parallel lanes. The estimate for 8 participants assumes 3 recommended, configurable runs. At 15 minutes per run, pure running time is around 3 h on 2 lanes and about 1 h 30 min on 4 lanes – excluding start breaks.

How are ties resolved?

The average is rounded to the nearest millisecond before ranking and display. Equal rounded values share a place; the next place follows competition ranking (for example, 1, 1, 3).

What if participants have different numbers of valid runs?

Example with three runs: A records 1:00, DNF and no time; B records 1:30 three times. A ranks ahead with a 1:00 mean versus B's 1:30 because only valid times are averaged. With different numbers of valid runs, this ranking is not a fair comparison and does not prove better performance. Set the same number of valid runs for everyone; open runs defer only the affected participant from the live leaderboard.

Can you show the average with an example?

Fictional example with four participants, three runs each and times in seconds. Anna: 30, 32, 34 → sum 96 ÷ 3 valid runs = 32. Ben: 32, 31, 33 → 96 ÷ 3 = 32. Dora: 28, 28, no time → 56 ÷ 2 = 28. Carla: 25, DNF, no time → 25 ÷ 1 = 25. For Dora and Carla all three runs are completed, but invalid or without a time. Ranking in ascending order of the average: Carla (25), Dora (28), then Anna and Ben tied (32 each, shared 3rd place → 1, 2, 3, 3). Carla only leads because a single valid run feeds her average; against the three valid runs of Anna and Ben this is not a fair comparison. DNF, DSQ and missing times count neither in the sum nor in the denominator.
