What is a single-run time trial with 8 participants?

In a single-run time trial, 8 participants get exactly one scored attempt – no repeat, no drop time. That one stopped time alone decides the placement, which makes the format especially quick to organise and creates an instantly understandable ranking. Unlike the multi-run variants there is no second chance: a strong run is rewarded immediately, a slip cannot be ironed out. The 8 participants run against the clock individually, and the ranking comes straight from the recorded times.

Calculation for 8 participants

With 8 participants, each person does one run: 8 runs in total.

Time Trial - Single Run with 8 participants: how scoring works

In a single-run time trial every participant has exactly one scored run – no choosing from multiple attempts, no sum and no average. Only that one stopped time counts, exactly and without rounding. For comparison: best-time scoring allows several runs and counts only the fastest, combined adds up all valid times, average forms the mean rounded to milliseconds. A run with DNF, DSQ or no time is not a valid run – then there is no ranking entry.

AspectRule
Runs per participantExactly one scored run – no repeat
What countsThe one stopped time
Ranking orderAscending by that time – the fastest leads
TiebreakerEqual valid times share a place; the next place follows competition ranking (for example, 1, 1, 3)
False start / fallNo second attempt; with DNF, DSQ or a missing time there is no valid run and therefore no ranking entry
Time unit & roundingRecorded in minutes:seconds, optionally accurate to milliseconds (mm:ss.ms); the stopped time counts exactly and is not rounded

How long does a single-run time trial with 8 participants take?

The table shows the pure running time for 8 participants: all runs spread across the parallel lanes (runs × run duration ÷ lanes). Start intervals between runs, timing and the award ceremony come on top as event time. Because everyone completes just one run, the single run is the shortest time-trial variant.

FAQ: Time Trial - Single Run

What is Time Trial - Single Run?

Each participant gets exactly one attempt, and that single time determines the ranking.

When is a single-run format useful?

It works well when time is limited or when the event should focus on one decisive attempt.

Can I still show live results?

Yes. As soon as the run is confirmed and locked, the time appears in the ranking; a run still open is held back until then.

Which events is this suitable for?

Ideal for compact timed events with exactly one run per participant, such as club races, school events or showcase competitions.

How long does a single-run time trial with 8 participants take?

Because everyone runs only once, this is the fastest variant. With 8 participants at 15 minutes per run the pure running time is around 1 h on 2 lanes and about 30 min on 4 lanes – each excluding start breaks.

What happens after a false start or fall?

There is no second attempt. A valid stopped time counts; with DNF, DSQ or a missing time there is no valid run and no ranking entry. If you want to allow repeats, use best-time or average scoring instead.

How does the single run differ from best-time scoring?

In a single run there is exactly one scored run – no repeat and no choice. In best-time scoring everyone completes several runs, of which only the fastest counts. If several runs should count together, combined (sum) or average (mean) are the fit.

What does a single-run ranking look like? (example with eight participants)

Fictional example with eight participants (A–H), each with one valid time in seconds: A 32.4; B 31.1; C 35.8; D 30.1; E 31.1; G 33.2; H 34.6. F has no valid time (DNF). Sorted this gives: 1st D (30.1); 2nd B (31.1) and 2nd E (31.1) tied; 4th A (32.4); 5th G (33.2); 6th H (34.6); 7th C (35.8). F does not appear in the ranking because without a valid run there is no entry.
