A knockout (elimination) tournament with 4 teams runs over 2 rounds. In every round teams play in pairs – the loser is eliminated immediately, the winner advances. After exactly 3 matches the champion is decided. Because half of the field drops out each round, the knockout format is the fastest option for 4 teams: it needs far fewer matches than a league and is ideal when you want a clear winner in a single day. A balanced seeding keeps the strongest teams apart until late; if the team count is not a power of two, Turniermeister automatically assigns byes in the first round.

How long does a 4-team knockout take?
Pure playing time depends on the number of parallel pitches and the match length. Matches in a round run in parallel, the rounds run one after another. Add extra time for breaks, setup and teardown.

What is a 4-team knockout good for?
A knockout with 4 teams is ideal when you need a clear winner in a single day – for club, school or company tournaments with a tight schedule. If you have time for a fuller preliminary stage, combine the knockout with a group stage so every team gets more than just one match.
How many matches does a knockout tournament with 4 teams have?
A knockout tournament with 4 teams has exactly 3 matches across 2 rounds – every match eliminates one team until the winner is decided. An optional third-place play-off adds one more match.
How long does a knockout tournament with 4 teams take?
At 15 minutes per match a knockout with 4 teams takes around 30 min on 2 pitches and about 30 min on 4 pitches – pure playing time. Add extra time for breaks as well as setup and teardown.
How many pitches or courts do I need for 4 teams?
More pitches mean more parallel matches and a shorter tournament. The first round has 2 matches – with 2 to 4 pitches a knockout with 4 teams fits comfortably into a single day.
Do I need a seeding list for 4 teams?
A seeding list is recommended: it spreads the strongest teams across the bracket so they only meet late. Turniermeister seeds automatically and lets you adjust the seeding manually if needed.
What happens if the team count is not a power of two?
If the number of participants is not a power of two (e.g. 6, 12 or 20 teams), Turniermeister automatically assigns byes in the first round. The affected teams advance one round without playing.
Can I share the bracket for 4 teams?
Yes! Every tournament has a public page with bracket and live results. Share it via link or QR code – spectators and teams see the current standings in real time.
How do I create a knockout fixture for 4 teams?
Enter the 4 teams and Turniermeister generates the complete knockout fixture automatically: all 2 rounds with 3 matches, seeded pairings and a shareable bracket with live results. No spreadsheet or manual fixture list needed.
