What is a multilevel knockout with 16 teams?

A multilevel knockout is a tiered KO tournament in which – unlike a classic knockout – no team is eliminated after its first loss. All 16 teams start in the main bracket; whoever loses a match moves into a placement round and plays for the next places. With the option "Play full consolation rounds", every team plays 4 matches and every final placement is decided exactly. With 16 teams that is 4 waves with 32 matches in total. Without the option, only the two best places of each placement group are decided; then not every team plays all 4 matches. Unlike a double elimination there is only one route to the title: whoever loses in the main bracket plays for placements, not for the win.

What is a multilevel knockout with 16 teams good for?

A multilevel knockout is ideal when each of the 16 teams should play as many matches as possible – for youth and club tournaments or paid-entry events where being knocked out after a single game would feel unfair. Because losers keep playing in placement rounds, every position is decided fairly and nobody goes home after just one match.

FAQ: Multilevel Knockout Tournament

What is a multilevel knockout tournament?

A multilevel knockout is a knockout tournament in which no team is eliminated after its first loss. Winners stay in the main bracket, losers keep playing placement matches for the next places. With the option "Play full consolation rounds" enabled, every place is decided at the end.

How many teams suit a multilevel knockout?

Turniermeister offers multilevel knockouts for 16, 32, 64 and 128 teams. The number of matches and the duration grow with the number of teams.

How are the placement matches built?

The losers of each knockout round form their own placement group, for example the third-place match, places 5–8 and places 9–16. By default, only the two best places of each group are decided. The option "Play full consolation rounds" plays every group down to the last place. The number of placements can be adjusted in the settings as long as no placement match has been played.

Can I create a multilevel knockout tournament online?

Yes. You can preview it without an account; saving requires registration. Public sharing and helper invitations are available on a paid plan.

How long does a multilevel knockout with 16 teams take?

With 16 teams there are 32 matches in 4 waves (8 matches each). Pure playing time is at least 4 h with 2 courts and at least 2 h with 4 courts. Basis: 15 minutes per match, without breaks, changeovers or the award ceremony. The calculation assumes the option “Play full consolation rounds” is enabled.

What is the difference between a multilevel and a normal knockout?

In a normal knockout, half of the teams are eliminated after each round. In a multilevel knockout, losers stay in the tournament and play for the next places. With the consolation option enabled, every team plays 4 matches with 16 teams and receives an exact final placement.
