A multilevel knockout is a tiered KO in which – unlike a classic knockout – no team is eliminated early. All 32 teams start in the main bracket; whoever loses a match drops into a placement round and keeps playing for their exact final ranking. The entire field therefore stays in the tournament until the end, every team plays a match in all 5 rounds, and in the end every position – not just the winner – is decided fairly. With 32 teams that means 5 rounds and 80 matches in total.

What is a multilevel knockout with 32 teams good for?
A multilevel knockout is ideal when each of the 32 teams should play as many matches as possible – for youth and club tournaments or paid-entry events where being knocked out after a single game would feel unfair. Because losers keep playing in placement rounds, every position is decided fairly and nobody goes home after just one match.
A multilevel knockout consists of multiple KO phases. Players eliminated in the first phase continue in a lower phase – ensuring a fair final ranking for everyone.
How many participants is multilevel knockout suitable for?
Multilevel knockout is ideal for large fields of 16+ teams. The more participants, the more levels are possible.
How are the levels determined?
Turniermeister automatically assigns losers from each round to the next level, ensuring equally matched opponents.
Can I create a multilevel knockout tournament online?
Yes! With Turniermeister you can create a multilevel knockout tournament in just a few clicks with automatic seeding, live results and PDF export.
How long does a multilevel knockout with 32 teams take?
With 32 teams there are 80 matches across 5 rounds (16 each). On 2 fields the pure playing time is around 10 h, on 4 fields about 5 h – breaks not included.
What is the difference between a multilevel knockout and a regular knockout?
In a regular knockout half the teams are eliminated after each round – in a multilevel knockout the losers keep playing in placement rounds. So every team gets a match in all 5 rounds and an exact final ranking instead of an early exit.
