What is an average-based time trial with 16 participants?

In this time trial, 16 participants complete several runs – 3 rounds are recommended. The ranking is based on the average of all recorded times: not the fastest run and not the sum, but the mean decides, so individual outliers up or down have less impact. The format rewards even performance across all attempts. As in any time trial, the 16 participants never face each other directly – everyone races against the clock on their own, and the ranking comes from the averaged times.

What is an average-based time trial with 16 participants good for?

Average scoring fits wherever even performance matters: with 16 participants the mean of several runs is scored – ideal for technical, youth and training competitions where a single outlier should not decide everything. That way steady form across the whole event counts, and a lucky or unlucky run barely distorts the result.

FAQ: Time Trial - Average

What is Time Trial - Average?

Each participant completes multiple runs, and the ranking is based on the average of all recorded times.

Why use average scoring?

Because it smooths out outliers and highlights consistently strong performances.

How many runs do I need?

At least two runs make sense. With more runs, the average becomes even more meaningful.

Which events is this suitable for?

Ideal for formats where consistency across several attempts should be rewarded, such as technical or youth competitions.

How long does an average-based time trial with 16 participants take?

It depends on the number of parallel lanes. With 16 participants and 3 runs each, the pure running time is around 6 h on 2 lanes and about 3 h on 4 lanes – each excluding start breaks.

How are ties resolved?

If two participants share the same average, the better single time decides.
